Economic Contribution of the Animal Feed and Pet Food Manufacturing Industry

The animal feed and pet food manufacturing industry is an important economic driver to the U.S. economy contributing 944,227 jobs, $297.1 billion in total sales, generating nearly $102.0 billion in additional value-added to the economy, and $55.9 billion in labor income and paid an estimated $22.5 billion in taxes at the local, state, and federal levels. These values are supported by an estimated 5,715 U.S. feed mills and 517 pet food manufacturing facilities and related economic activity. Through purchases from and sales to many other industries, the animal feed and pet food manufacturing industry has a large impact on the local, state and national economies. Given generally increasing worldwide demand for protein and pet ownership rates, it is expected that this industry will continue to thrive and contribute to the economic well-being of the United States.
