Economic Contribution of Missouri Agriculture and Forestry

In a 2021 update to a 2016 analysis of the economic contribution of agriculture and forestry within Missouri, DIS found that agriculture and forestry continue to be a significant driver of economic activity within Missouri.   

In 2021, agriculture, forestry, and related industries in Missouri are estimated to contribute: 

  • $34.9 billion in value added 
  • 456,618 jobs 
  • $93.7 billion in output 
  • $31.8 billion in household income 

Of the $34.9 billion in total value added and 456,618 jobs derived from agriculture, forestry, and related economic activity: 

  • Crop production and related industries contributed: 
    • $5.4 billion in value added 
    • 81,095 jobs 
  • Livestock production and related industries contributed: 
    • $9.5 billion in value added 
    • 155,425 jobs  
  • Other agriculture industries contributed:  
    • $15.0 billion in value added 
    • 167,409 jobs 
  • Forestry and related industries contributed: 
    • $4.9 billion in value added 
    • 52,690 jobs 

Compared to the previous study conducted in 2016, the economic contribution of agriculture, forestry, and related industries in Missouri has increased significantly: 

  • Value added contribution increased by $1.9 billion ($33.0 billion in 2016) 
  • Jobs contribution increased by 78,386 (378,232 in 2016) 
  • Output contribution increased by $5.3 billion ($88.4 billion in 2016)
